The Phoenix Fringe Festival (PHX:fringe) seeks to develop a culturally engaged urban audience by offering an edgy assortment of performance choices in non-traditional downtown Phoenix spaces.  PHX:fringe promotes artistic exploration by showing the adventurous work of established and emerging artists in accessible, affordable performances for the community.

BACKGROUND:

PHX:fringe is a nonprofit organization founded in early 2008 by a group of theatre artists and producers with a shared vision for the importance of small venue, live theatre in downtown Phoenix, Arizona.

In May 2008 the Phoenix Fringe Festival Pilot Project introduced itself to Valley audiences featuring twenty-five different artists over the course of one extraordinary weekend. Several participating productions have since been selected to perform around the country most notably at Philly Fringe and the New York International Fringe Festival.

PHX:fringe has it roots in the long and well established movement that traces back to the original Edinburgh International Festival Fringe, which started spontaneously in 1947. That year a handful of renegade companies showed up to the Edinburgh International Festival without an invitation or a place to perform they decided to set up shop anywhere they could find a space. While contemporary Fringe Festivals are better organized than their predecessors and take advantage of group marketing and administrative efficiencies the Fringe spirit continues to promote free and open artistic expression.

Many individuals have contributed to making PHX:fringe a success so far and many more will in the future.  If you are interested in joining the PHX:fringe team for 2011, please contact Patrick Demers or Daniel Roth for additional information.
